2017 Bmw X1 - Ratings, Complaints and Recalls

The 2017 BMW X1 SUV AWD has not been rated for safety by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in various crash tests including front crash, side crash, and rollover. However, it is worth noting that the vehicle comes equipped with standard electronic stability control and optional forward collision warning, which could potentially enhance its safety features. Unfortunately, it does not have lane departure warning system.

In terms of complaints and recalls, the BMW X1 has received a total of 107 complaints and has been subject to 2 recalls. While the lack of safety ratings may raise some concerns, the presence of electronic stability control and forward collision warning system could contribute positively to the overall safety of the vehicle. It is advisable for potential buyers to consider these factors when evaluating the safety of the 2017 BMW X1.

Safety Features

2017 BMW X1 SUV AWD Safety Features

Here are the safety features that come as standard on the 2017 BMW X1 SUV AWD

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC is an advanced safety feature in vehicles designed to help drivers maintain control during challenging driving conditions. By continuously monitoring various factors such as steering angle, vehicle speed, and individual wheel speeds, ESC can detect and reduce the risk of skidding or loss of control. It achieves this by automatically applying brakes to specific wheels to stabilize the vehicle.

Standard
Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

Forward Collision Warning (FCW) is a safety feature in vehicles that helps prevent frontal collisions by alerting the driver of an imminent collision with a vehicle or obstacle ahead. Using sensors such as radar or cameras, FCW monitors the distance and speed of vehicles in front, and if it detects a potential collision, it provides visual and/or auditory warnings to prompt the driver to take evasive action.

Optional
Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is a safety feature in vehicles that alerts drivers when their vehicle unintentionally drifts out of its lane without signaling. Utilizing cameras or sensors to monitor lane markings on the road, LDW detects when the vehicle crosses these lines and triggers visual, auditory, or haptic alerts to notify the driver of potential lane departure.

Component Complaints

Complaint:
"there is a small, broken spring in my shift lever ($10 part) that makes the car think it cannot be put into park. this otherwise does not affect the operation of the vehicle, but every time i get in the car, i am greeted with a warning message to "secure vehicle against rolling" and "visit a service center". this failure is ubiquitous amongst f48 x1 cars; there are entire threads and 3rd party services to replace the small, cheap part, as opposed to a job bmw dealers try and sell you for over 2000$ to replace the entire shifter unit, which isn't the problem. a recall for this ridiculous part and design should be forced."
Components Involved: POWER TRAIN
Date of incident: 2022-08-09

Complaint:
"during the parking of this vehicle (when you put the gearbox shifter in the p position), the idrive system shows the following message: “secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. have the problem checked by service partner.” this happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground. the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. after turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in r or d position, you click "ok" and the error goes away, until the next time you park it. i have found through one of the biggest bmw global forums - [xxx] that this issue is very common, and it seems that the problem most likely is either in weak design of gearbox shifter unit or in gearbox mechatronic unit and unfortunately it is common for bmw models f48, f39, f45 and f46. at the same time, bmw hasn’t announced any recall procedure, despite the fact that both of the units mentioned are quite expensive and definitely shouldn’t appear in modern cars. it also seems that the component that faults is a small spring deep inside the gear selector, that costs less than $10. there are videos on the process to replace that, but bmw dealers quote the complete replacement of the gear selector, for more than $2,000 and sometimes even up to $4,000 dollars. i feel there should be a recall. there is a law firm collecting signatures for a class action... "car experiences a very rough idle at start and often stalls after being place in gear. this can happen after car starts moving. my wife drives this car and is experiencing regular stalls after pulling away."
Components Involved: POWER TRAIN
Date of incident: 2025-04-12

Complaint:
"the following error message is displayed: "secure vehicle against rolling" this message is displayed due to a broken spring in the gear selector mechanism. because of the broken spring, the car's computer cannot detect whether or not the gear selector is in park. this creates a safety hazard because the gear selector can be shifted into drive without having your foot on the brake. note that a very large number of bmw owners have complained about this problem on social media and in the bmw message forum. this is clearly wide scale problem that stems from a faulty design and it creates a potential safety hazard."

Complaint:
"code 420106: shiftlock solenoid: selector wrongly not locked in park. 'secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary' error message in i-drive. this is a very common issue with these vehicles, and bmw refused to help due to the labor cost involved. it's a $0.50 part and with labor the repair exceeds $2000. essentially the vehicle does not realized if it is in park or not, and chimes at you to use the parking brake to prevent it from rolling. there are thousands of people affected by this very expensive manufacturer's defect."

Complaint:
"vehicle at 60,000 miles. vehicle displays an error message: "transmission: secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. consult service center." the problem appears to be with the gear shifter, with a broken spring that causes the error. the component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer."

Complaint:
"i am getting an error message to “secure vehicle against rolling” when i place vehicle in park and turn it off."

Complaint:
"secure vehicle against rolling message displayed every time the vehicle is put in park"
Components Involved: POWER TRAIN

Complaint:
"secure vehicle against rolling error: a spring in the shifter will fix the issue . during the parking of vehicle (gearbox shifter in p position) and turning off the engine, idrive system shows the following message: “secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. have the problem checked by service partner.” this happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground. the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. after turn on the engine again and put the shifter either in r or d position, error goes away."

Date of incident: 2023-09-08

Complaint:
"error msg indicating “secure vehicle against rolling” appeared. also, “transmission: secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. consult service center.” apparently from many comments from other bmw owners and mechanics the issue is common and is related to an inexpensive spring that has broken in the shifter box. it seems the broken spring prevents the electronic system from receiving a signal that the car is in park. also, from comments, this a very expensive repair. i’m not sure of the safety risk with this, but perhaps it is time for a recall??"
